Here is a chart listing some basic spacings and square foot coverages.  Under this, we have listed another simple calculation.

ALTERNATIVE METHOD:

Figuring out the quantity depends on how far apart you intend to space your annuals, or groundcover.  In this chart below, the left column indicates how far apart you intent do space your plants, and the right column is the number you need to multiply by the total square footage of the area you intend to plant.

Example: if you want to cover an area of 120 square feet with plant that you intend on spacing 10 inches apart, the equation would look like this:

120 (Sq Ft) x 1.45 = 174 (Plants)
