Vitex, also known by their common name of Chastetrees, are deciduous large shrubs or small trees. Vitex grow up to 10 feet tall and around 8 feet wide, blooming violet blue or white flowers in July and August. Aromatic leaves are an attractive grayish-green color with 5-7 lance-shaped, compound leaflets. To control size, this plant can be pruned back hard in the early spring, similar to Butterfly Bush. Vitex can also be limbed up and grown as a multi-trunk small tree. For best growth, plant in a full sun area, with loose, moderately moist, well-drained soil. Bloom color and other plant characteristics are variety specific.
